VideoDrive supports subtitles in Tiger and Leopard

Post  Aroona on Mon May 19, 2008 12:02 am

VideoDrive subtitle support is fully compatible with both Tiger and Leopard! Follow these 3 steps:

1) Put the subtitles in separate SRT files and save them in the same folder as your videos, with the same file name (e.g. MyMovie.avi and MyMovie.srt)
2) Import the video with VideoDrive (use any import option but the first one)
3) Watch your videos with subtitles in iTunes and Front Row

However, there is indeed a bug in the current version of Front Row causing the image to go black when subtitles appear. This is not a VideoDrive issue, but an Apple issue (related to Perian). We hope it will be fixed soon! In the mean time: check out the feature request section of this forum: we are adding a feature to easily switch on and off subtitles in iTunes!

Still have black screen in FR with subtitles

Post  Meinard on Thu Jul 24, 2008 3:25 pm

I use Leopard and would like to have subtitles in Frontrow. I downloaded the trial version of VideoDrive (version 1.6.2.01(142)).

For an AVI movie with SRT subtitles I have checked:
-Show Subtitles
-Force Front Row Compatibility
Then I hit "Toggle", but still a black screen when I try to view the movie in FrontRow. In Itunes the movie shows just fine, including subtitles.

I tried to reimport the movie, switch the Imac off and on again, but the result is still the same.

Any suggestions?

This is very difficult to diagnose: the problem with the blackout is actually a front row / Perian bug, so VideoDrive uses a workaround. We have tested our solution on multiple machines, so at this moment it is very hard to say why it isn't working for your. Are you sure you have Perian installed, and checked to box in System Preferences (Perian) to "load external subtitles"? Do subtitles display correctly in QuickTime and iTunes? Does toggling work in Quicktime and iTunes? Which video files are we talking about?

Do you have QuickTime Pro? that could help in determining the problem.

Thanks for looking at this.

-Perian is installed.
-"load external subtitles" is checked.
-Subtitles work both in Itunes and Quicktime.
-In Itunes I can switch off the subtitles by going through the VideoDrive procedure.
-In Quicktime I can not switch the subtitles off in the "display" menu
-this is what my test movie in AVI says:
Generic MPEG-4, 624 x 352, Duizenden
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48,000 kHz
Text Subtitle, 624 x 352, Miljoenen+

-Yes I have Quicktime Pro. Can this be the problem?

Can you provide as much detail as you can about your video and what exactly you did?
Which video format do you have? If you play it in QuickTime, go to movie properties to find more technical details.
Which VideoDrive import method did you use?

Do you have the issue with all your videos or just some?

Also, please upgrade to version 1.6.3.01 (available at www.aroona.net) as it offers more detailed error messages.

Hey again
I have my movie in a folder, where i have the movie and the subtitle file, then I open VideoDrive, press Import videos find my movie, and then it puts it in Itunes, then i says Toggle Subtitles and press Show Subtitles, and Force Front Row compatibility, and it works fine in Itunes, but when i open it in fron row, and there is speaking/subtitles it goes black, and I can only hear the sound...
I have also tried the beta version there is.

Movie Info:
AVI File
624 x 256 pixler

Have also tried with a mkv file and mp4, and that don't work as well.

If you use the recent version of VideoDrive, the error report appearing at the end of the process should indicate what the problem was. To check if your video can be made compatible with VideoDrive, try this: can you open the reference file in QuickTime and go to movie inspector (under the 'Window' menu). Please send or post all listed information (if you do not want to type, you can take a screenshot). Even better: If you have QuickTime Pro, you can also go to Movie Properties. Take a screenshot of the upper part of the window and send us this information. This way we can evaluate the issue.

Front Row and Subtitles

Post  xRiCky on Thu May 27, 2010 6:34 pm

I've noticed that movies with subtitles arent playback well in front row. They are choppy. I assume problem is the in perian and newer version will fix this, but appart of that I still have issue with subtitles in iTunes. In some videos are built in english subtitles which are showing under my external subtitles. Is there a way to turn the only english off ? Because when I toggle subtitles in VideoDrive it hide both of them.
And one non exactly related question, if I import videos by third metod (compatible container) they will be hardware accelerated by GPU ?
