IMDB Search failure and possible solution

Post  Lone Baggie on Thu May 29, 2008 9:55 pm

I have been having a great deal of trouble locating metadata for particular episodes of TV Series (DR Who) via the search option within VideoDrive. However I could find the correct information if I manually searched IMDB.com. No matter how I arranged the title within VideoDrive search box it could not find the same page. It finally dawned on me to use the reference in the url in the page I had manually searched in IMDB.com ie the url was http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0562992/ so I entered tt0562992 in search box in videodrive and it found the metadata OK.

Is it possible for the program to automatically take the metadata from safari on an opened IMDB.com page or allow the url to be entered as a search option. I could then import the entire Series in one go and VideoDrive could then search from that link (ie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436992/episodes#season-1) and find all the episodes in one go , rather them me cutting and pasting the url into each episode as it failed the search.

I am not sure what you mean with "locating metadata for individual episodes". If you type in the name of the TV Show (NOT the name of the episodes) in the online results window, VideoDrive will look up the metadata. It will display the GENERAL metadata, and optionally display the indication "Individual Episode descriptions are available and will be included". (note that you need to have the option to download "individual episode information" enabled in Automatic Metadata preferences).

The actual individual metadata is never displayed on screen. VideoDrive only asks you if the general metadata is correct for each new season it encounters, NOT for each episode individually. But it will add the individual episode info later on, so there is NO need for copy/paste. Can you give some examples of keywords you used that do not give the results you expected?

OK

I have the following folder format for example above. Doctor Who ---> Season 1 ------> 01 Rose.avi 02 The End of the World.avi etc

I ask Videodrive to import from the folder doctor who. The search fails. Any combinations of words i try also fails unless i use the tt tag from IMDB in this case
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0562992. The complete search data for season 1 Doctor who is at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436992/episodes#season-1. If I could tell Videodrive where the search data resides for complete season It could import Season 1 correctly.

If I give the general information for series for each season and import the entire folder structure Videodrive tags each episode for the 1963 series. I THink Dr Who is just too difficult for the programs search algorithms (must be a temporal flux in the time matrix Smile ) .

I think the point im trying to make (very badly !!) is some times the human can search better than the computer and the ability to point the computer in the right place would save me having to import the episodes individually and search using the IMDB tag number

You are right: for some reason VideoDrive always takes the old series instead of the new one. We will look into this to fine-tune the search algorithm. However, your suggestion to add an option to copy from the browser is really interesting. We will include it as soon as possible!

Version 1.6.1 has been released introducing a "Copy From Browser" feature. If you browse with Safari to the right metadata page and click the button, all data will be copied to VideoDrive. This feature does not work for individual TV Show episodes yet.

The search algorithm has not been changed yet so the automatic results are still the same.

Let us know if the new feature works out for you!

Just to let you know metadata from safari works great

It feels quite nice to come up with a good idea once in while. Many thanks for implementing my suggestion Smile
