Leave source files in thier original location

Post  mrb0nj on Thu Mar 05, 2009 10:41 am

Here is my scenario:

TV Show downloads
VideoDrive encodes file and moves in into subfolders with the newly encoded file
TV Show stops seeding as the source file is missing.

I don't know under which conditions the source files are moved to a new location, but this is my current setup:

Import Method: 5. Convert to Apple TV optimized videos
add compatible videos to itunes - checked
Move videos to specified folder - checked
- Organize into sub folders - checked

Many thanks in advance Smile

Do you have "Move Original Files to Trash if possible" selected (Under Preferences - Import)?

well, that was my only thought as to why the original file might go missing. Other than that... I guess if the file seeding is an MP4 or MOV (something that is compatible with iTunes) then VideoDrive won't be making another file, so the original will get moved into your destination folder.

it's weird, the source file is a .avi and the destination format is .m4v (apple tv compat) anyways, it would be nice if it could leave the original file in its original location that would be awesome Smile

In your scenario, the original file should be moved to the target folder too. This is done so that you can use Hot Folders as a download inbox. When videos arrive, VideoDrive processes them and moves them out again.

If you do not need the original file (as is the case in method 5) you can select the option to trash them.

So, what you want is something else:
- keep the original file in the original location
- create the converted file in the target folder

This is indeed not possible at the moment.

Hi, I don't know if this was addressed in a more recent version? My scenario has changed slightly since the original request, but the results are the same.

I use import method 9. Import directly into iTunes and it would be very useful if it could copy the file to the destination directory rather than move it, is this possible? It would also be great if it could clean up the destination file name like it does with other import methods?

Lastly, since i now stream my video to my PS3 rather than my AppleTV i really only use VideoDrive to catalog and organise the video files, an option to switch off iTunes integration would be great, for me at least! I realise that the iTunes integration is a very important aspect of this app and understand if it isn't something you want to put in.

Many thanks in advance Smile

Is your current destination folder inside or outside the iTunes library?

What do you mean with organizing video files? You want to put them in subfolders without adding to iTunes?

You are correct, the destination folder is outside the iTunes Library and yes, i want to put them in subfolders without adding to iTunes. Smile

And you only want this to move files? not to convert or metatag them?

To copy the files, leaving the original file in it's original location. Also, cleaning up the filename (including any episode title etc) would be very nice.

Skipping the iTunes-adding part would not be a problem. We will try to incorporate it in a new version.

Also, we will investigate if we can change the behavior of method 9 to not move files.
